What do you need:
- 400 grams of peanuts
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil (sunflower oil or olive oil is also fine)
- If desired: pinch of sea salt (mini teaspoon)
- If desired: your favorite combination flavor, for example sambal or chocolate sprinkles
Step 1: The peanuts
Unfortunately, the tastiest peanuts for making peanut butter, the so-called runner type (very small peanuts), are very hard to come by. You may find them in a nut specialty store, but even there it is difficult. If you are there, ask for unroasted peanuts, then you have the ultimate basis for the tastiest peanut butter.
Step 2: Roasting
Unroasted peanuts can be roasted for 16 minutes at 180 degrees, on a flat baking sheet. A little shorter or longer is possible, depends on how darkly roasted you like them, experiment with this. Normal peanuts that have already been roasted can also be roasted for another 5 minutes at 180 degrees on a baking sheet, they are usually lightly roasted. It gives a better taste if they are freshly roasted. We personally prefer dark roasted. Be careful, take them out in time because they will continue to cook for at least another 5 minutes and will therefore also become darker / more roasted.
Step 3: Grinding/Blending
If you have a mortar and pestle at home, you can really grind the peanuts completely, then the peanut butter is super smooth. When blending or in the food processor, you actually have all tiny pieces of peanut but that is also very tasty. In that case, first add the oil and possibly the salt, then gradually add the peanuts. Grind the peanuts until it is a completely smooth mass, in the food processor or blender this will take about 7 minutes.
Step 4: Mixing
Want to add another ingredient? Now is the time! Stir it well and remember that too many ingredients together generally do not make it tastier. Just like too much of 1 ingredient. Try bit by bit to see if it still tastes good. For inspiration, you can try our test package with 10 different flavors. Have you come up with a winner? Let us know!
Step 5: The perfect finish after making peanut butter
Homemade peanut butter is best on a slice of bread fresh out of the oven with a thick layer of butter, phew! You just made a jar of peanut butter that: *doesn't contain palm oil *is low in salt *doesn't contain stabilizers *doesn't contain sugar. After a hard day's work, it's time to rest!
Step 6: Shelf life
Store your peanut butter in a well-sealed jar. Be aware that homemade peanut butter has a much shorter shelf life than store-bought. A month is about the limit. Fresh food is of course the tastiest! Do you want to store it a bit longer? Then put it in the fridge, that will extend the shelf life by a week. Still a bit too much work? We don't blame you and do it with all our love for you.
